India is the country with the highest number of road accidents and fatalities globally! The "Accident Index 2024," released by leading insurance provider ACO, reveals that metro cities account for a staggering 78 percent of all road accidents in the nation, with Hyderabad and Delhi NCR leading the pack.

Caution in High-Risk Areas

While Hyderabad and Delhi NCR dominate the accident statistics, Pune and Bangalore follow closely with 15.9 percent and 14.2 percent of incidents, respectively. Within Bangalore, Bommanahalli has been identified as a particularly hazardous zone. Other notable high-risk areas include Noida, Marunji in Pune, and Meera Road in Mumbai.

ACO’s report also highlights the most frequently involved vehicles in these accidents. Models like the Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and Maruti Suzuki Baleno are among the high-risk cars mentioned. The Hyundai i20 and Maruti Suzuki Dzire also appear on the list.

Mayank Gupta, Vice President of ACO General Insurance, stated, "This report aims to assist policymakers and city managers in implementing effective measures to enhance road safety by identifying accident-prone locations and their underlying causes."

Key Causes of Road Accidents

The report sheds light on the primary causes of road accidents in India. Stray dogs are responsible for 62 percent of incidents, followed by cows at 29 percent and buffalo at 4 percent. Alarmingly, coconut-related incidents occur 2.2 times more frequently than those linked to drunk driving.

Potholes remain a significant danger; 44.8 percent of pothole-related accidents occur in Bangalore, with Delhi and Mumbai following at 13.3 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively. The ACO report underscores the urgent need to improve urban infrastructure for enhanced road safety. Additionally, natural disasters pose serious risks, with 22 percent of insurance claims in Chennai attributed to flood damage from Cyclone Michong.

While we cannot control natural calamities, experts emphasise the importance of cautious driving and choosing vehicles with high safety ratings. Stay safe on the roads!
